Wildlife Photography Guidelines 2026

Essential Photography & Camera Tips inside Rajaji Tiger Reserve

Capturing wild Asian elephants, Bengal tigers, and rare avian species in their natural habitat requires preparation, patience, and adherence to strict eco-tourism guidelines.

Golden Hours for Lighting

The morning safari (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) offers soft mist and warm golden sunlight filtering through Sal forest foliage. Evening safaris (3:00 PM – 6:00 PM) provide spectacular riverbed backlight as animals head to water sources.

Gear & Lens Recommendations

A telephoto zoom lens (100-400mm or 200-600mm) is recommended for wild animals and birds from inside the safari Gypsy. Bring beanbags or monopods for vehicle stabilization; tripods are not usable inside open Gypsies.

Strict Ethical Conduct

Camera flash and electronic call sounds are strictly forbidden. Visitors must stay seated inside the jeep at all times. Maintain a safe distance of at least 30 meters from wild Asian elephants.

Drone & Video Permits

Personal hand-held still cameras have no extra fee. Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are strictly prohibited across all zones. Commercial documentary filmmaking requires advance Forest Department clearance.
